On Sunday evening I wrote about Dexter Fowler and the Jays being "still apart," according to a report from Jon Heyman. Well, here on Monday afternoon they're still still apart, but according to Heyman, not by that much.

If anybody has been trying to answer the question, "What's the sound of Paul Kinzer crying out for help?", Jon Heyman may well have just provided it for you.

Was Sunday night's Mitch Moreland talk just a way to get Steve Pearce and his agent to act? Maybe! The thought of the Smoak-like first baseman playing the outfield sure didn't quite smell right, and now the Jays have gone and signed themselves an actual outfield-playing first baseman. Steve Pearce!
Uh... Steve Pearce?

OK, OK, title jokes aside, there's not a whole lot worse than trying to figure out a puzzling baseball decision amid a torrent of outraged fans so sure they know exactly what it means: that the team is stupid and cheap and hellbent on ruining their summer. And I think we might be getting real close to a moment like that, because Shi Davidi published a piece this evening at Sportsnet about the Jays' interest in Mitch Moreland that reads like this isn't so much whispering as it is something that could be -- might be -- maybe is -- really happening.
On the surface of it Mitch Moreland sucks. There can be no doubt about that. But let's think about this a little.

Alright, I've got good news and bad news.
The good news? The Jays and Dexter Fowler's camp are indeed talking!
That's obviously excellent, because Fowler sure as hell fits a need for the Jays, being a switch-hitting good defensive outfielder who gets on-base at a very tasty clip. I've written about what a good fit he'd be for this roster a few times recently, and it's still the damn truth. In fact, based on the contract it seems like he'll get, the way that he fits the roster, his age, and his 2016 season, I think he's clearly a better target for this club than Edwin Encarnacion. (Even if I'd take EE back in a heartbeat, because it's Edwin).
