They’re calling it a “right knee sprain” though I have a feeling it’s actually a little bit of “can’t hit disease.” Regardless, Randal Grichuk was placed on the 10-day disabled list today and Gift Ngoepe has been recalled from Triple-A Buffalo in his place.
This sorta solves Toronto’s roster crunch for now as Josh Donaldson, who’s currently on a rehab assignment, should be ready to return in the next few days. Grichuk could be out for up to three weeks, meaning they wouldn’t have to make the difficult decision to send Teoscar Hernandez down while he’s killing it at the MLB level.
The Jays already opted to send the struggling Devon Travis to Triple-A because he has options, but they can’t do that with Grichuk who has to just navigate his struggles on the big league roster or get exposed to waivers.
Grichuk obviously hurt himself on that weird diving catch he made in the first inning of Sunday’s game. Welcome to the turf, Randal. It doesn’t take any prisoners.
