Thoughts on the Blue Jays’ most recent call-up, lefty pitcher Foster Griffin

The Blue Jays have called up former first-rounder, Foster Griffin. What does he offer?

The 27-year-old was acquired via trade in mid-July, which saw pitching prospect Jonatan Bernal traded to the Kansas City Royals.

Drafted all the way back in the 2014 draft, this season is the first that Griffin has pitched out of the pen. Between the Omaha Storm Chasers and Buffalo Bisons in Triple-A, he has posted a 2.01 ERA, a 27.36 K%, and a 6.97 BB% in 49.1 innings.

Since joining the Blue Jays organization, he has had a 2.11 ERA and a 3.22 FIP in 21.1 innings pitched. He has a 25 K% and 8.7 BB%.

In Triple-A this season, he has a 27 Whiff % (95 whiffs on 343 total swings), a 31.71 Called Strike + Whiff % (95 whiffs, 113 strikes on 656 total pitches), and a 14.48 Swinging Strike % (95 whiffs on 656 total pitches).

Using Baseball Savant data from when he pitched in the MLB, he sits in the mid-90s with his fastball. Griffin also features a cutter, changeup, and curveball, although that data is from before joining the Jays organization. This isn’t Griffin’s first cup of tea in the bigs, as he’s pitched 6 innings with a 9 ERA, with a 10 K% and 13.3 BB%.

Either way, the 27-year-old lefty deserves this opportunity.
