The second day of the Canadian Futures Showcase on Wednesday showed prospects in game mode. Five games were scheduled as top talent went head-to-head in nine-inning showdowns. The key takeaways from these matchups were on the mound.
The focus of today’s scouting adventure was highly effective arms with division one and/or draft potential. The focal point was pitchers who projected well from a physical maturity standpoint, baseline metrics, and pitchability. Here’s who stood out…
Right-Handed Pitcher, Will Hynes (Team Royal)
Will Hynes has been an arm to pay attention to for a while. The Ontario Blue Jays product was also part of the Canadian Junior National Team this year, and rightfully so. His pitch profile is very projectable despite his slightly undersized physical profile.
Hynes’ game statistics weren’t exactly what we were looking for; however, his repertoire and approach were mint. The right-hander executed his fastball well, which was commanded and zoned up around the corners. He sat around 90.6-91.5 mph, maxing out at 92 mph with more in the tank.
Hynes worked in a change-up that lived low at 84-85 mph, along with a sinker that actioned on the arm side between 90-91. He worked big sticks well, pitching around them, and did not get beat with barrels.
Left-Handed Pitcher Sean Duncan (Team New Blue)
Sean Duncan was the opposition against Will Hynes and Team Royal in this game. The lefty comes from the west coast of Canada, Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. He’s from the notorious Langley Blaze program.
Duncan also has a slightly undersized frame but heats it up and works effectively. The southpaw was dealing and putting the radar gun to work. His four-pitch mix included a fastball that topped 93 mph, a sinker that saw up to 92 mph, a changeup that worked 82-83, and a slider in the late 70s.
Despite some rough matchups and walks, Duncan worked counts effectively and challenged righties. He forced groundouts and flyouts. His pitch profile is draft-worthy, but his size may be the deciding factor.
Thomas Khan, Max Poirier, and Xander Guedes also showed some physical looks and strong collegiate potential. Each pitcher had good projectable showings despite struggles with closing out their at-bats. We’ll track these arms as the week progresses into more gameplay.
