A night after exploding for 10 runs, the Blue Jays offense was held in check for only one, as 40-year-old Adam Wainwright pitched 7 strong frames and the St. Louis Cardinals halted Toronto&#8217;s seven-game winning streak with a 6-1 win.

Kevin Gausman had a less than memorable start tonight for the Jays. He only went 4 2/3 innings, while giving up 8 hits, 5 runs, one walk, and six strikeouts. Dylan Carlson and Lars Nootbaar both tagged Gausman with RBI doubles in the 3rd and 4th inning respectively, with both hits coming off of Gausman&#8217;s splitter.
Cardinals rookie Nolan Gorman led off the 5th inning with a solo home run to give St. Louis a 3-1 lead. Later in the inning, with one on and two out, Gausman had a chance to get out of the inning facing Tyler O&#8217;Neill. However, Gausman walked O&#8217;Neill, and he was pulled from the game for Trevor Richards. In what arguably was the turning point of the game, Albert Pujols took Richards deep for a 3-run home run, and the game was out of hand. It was career home run number 686 for Pujols, and he got all of it, hitting it 439 feet. As good as Wainwright was, the game would&#8217;ve looked a whole lot different if either Gausman or Richards could&#8217;ve gotten out of that inning with the team only down by two instead of five.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. provided most of the offense tonight for Toronto. Vladdy was 2-for-4 with a double. He hit a one-out single in the 4th inning, and stole second base during Alejandro Kirk&#8217;s at-bat. The next batter, Bo Bichette, drove Guerrero in with an RBI single. Per Shi Davidi, Guerrero went from second to home in 6.86 seconds, his fastest time from second to home this season. Outside of Guerrero, only Bichette, Matt Chapman, and Raimel Tapia could register hits for Toronto.
While tonight&#8217;s game wasn&#8217;t very fun to watch, it&#8217;s important to remember that the post-All-Star break has been good to Toronto. The Jays have scored 51 runs in 5 games, and they have a very winnable series starting tomorrow against recently pronounced sellers in the Detroit Tigers.
Speaking of the Detroit series, Ross Atkins announced today that Yusei Kikuchi will get the start for Toronto in Game 1. Tyler Alexander is listed as his opposition for Detroit. It will be Kikuchi&#8217;s first start since going on the IL for a neck strain. Kikuchi had a solid outing in Buffalo, and it has been reported that he has made some mechanical adjustments to his slider and his fastball. A lot of eyes will be on Yusei as he looks to earn his spot back in the Blue Jays rotation.
