Expect the expected when it comes to the Rule 5 draft.

The annual draft is a rather boring affair where bad teams will poach one player off a good team’s minor league roster, while all the good teams pass. Once again, the Blue Jays were not involved in the major league portion of the draft.
In fact, there were only ten total picks. Three New York Yankees were selected, two Boston Red Sox were selected, and the remaining five were split between Tampa, Miami, Texas, Seattle, and Arizona. The full list is below.

As you can see, there were no Blue Jays taken. There was some speculation that 2020 second-round pick CJ Van Eyk may be selected after an impressive Arizona Fall League. Other players that the Jays were able to keep are Rafael Lantigua, Alex de Jesus, Adrian Pinto, Gabriel Martinez, and others.
The minor league portion was a little bit more exciting, as the Blue Jays left open a spot to select a player for this portion. With this pick, the Jays selected Alexis Hernandez, an outfielder from the Boston organization.

Last season, the 21-year-old slashed .267/.380/.379 with three home runs in 192 plate appearances between Boston’s Florida Complex League team and their Single-A team. He spent the majority of the season in Single-A, slashing .252/.345/.364 with all three homers in 174 plate appearances. Overall, he walked 28 times (14.6 BB%) and struck out 38 times (19.8 K%).

The Blue Jays also lost two players in the minor league portion, Angel Del Rosario and Trevor Schwecke.
Starting with the former, Del Rosario  spent the majority of the season in Single-A where he slashed .280/.359/.434 with five homers in 211 plate appearances. The 20-year-old infielder had an 8.5 BB% and a 28.4 K% for a 116 wRC+, along with 25 stolen bases in 34 attempts.

Schwecke spent the majority of his season with Double-A New Hampshire, where he slashed .280/.377/.443 with seven home runs in 294 plate appearances. The 25-year-old utility player also saw some time in Triple-A, where he slashed .265/.333/.367 in 55 plate appearances with a homer.
