Alek Manoah is officially on the road to recovery.

The 26-year-old righty underwent successful Tommy John surgery Monday, Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters Tuesday afternoon, including TSN’s Scott Mitchell. It was a hybrid ligament replacement procedure that included an internal brace being inserted.

Manoah is expected to rejoin the club before they depart Rogers Centre following Wednesday’s series finale versus the Boston Red Sox. He plans to rehab in Toronto, Schneider said.

With Manoah likely out for 12-14 months, odds are he’ll trend towards returning around next summer’s All-Star break, potentially following a similar timeline to Hyun Jin Ryu’s return from his TJ surgery last season.

After struggles plagued him in 2023, the ’22 All-Star began this season on the 15-day IL before returning to the majors last month, making five starts, with his final one of ’24 coming on the road against the Chicago White Sox on May 29. He pitched to a 3.70 ERA and 5.17 FIP, striking out 26 batters and walking eight.

Two seasons ago, Manoah finished third in American League Cy Young voting, coming off a career year where he placed fourth in ERA (2.24) among qualified big-league starters and posted a 3.35 FIP with 180 punchouts. He completed at least five innings in all 31 starts, leaving after eight on two separate occasions.

Given Yusei Kikuchi’s uncertain future, and now with Manoah likely sidelined through the first half of 2025, the Blue Jays will undoubtedly be in the market for at least one starting pitcher — perhaps more — this winter.
