The Blue Jays shut out the Detroit Tigers again on Saturday afternoon by a score of 3-0 to put them at 2-1 on the season. Aaron Sanchez was excellent in his first start and, uh, I have a feeling this is going to be a looooooong season for Detroit.

Things worth mentioning…

  • The Blue Jays have now gotten 19-consecutive scoreless innings from their starting pitchers to start the season. Marcus Stroman and Matt Shoemaker each tossed seven innings and Sanchez, in his season debut today, went five. He probably could have gone a little deeper but his pitch count got elevated due in part to some questionable non-strike calls against him. Anyways, Sanchez was great, hitting 97 on the gun with his fastball and showing pitches with a lot of movement. It was like watching in 2016.
  • The bullpen had a bigger task on Saturday than the first two games with Sanchez only going five. Tim Mayza was brought in to get two outs in the sixth, then Daniel Hudson got a chance to redeem himself. Hudson struck out a batter to end the sixth and then he got a couple more outs in the seventh before handing the ball off to Joe Biagini. Like with Sanchez, it felt like we were watching Biagini in 2016 as he went an inning-and-a-third collecting two strikeouts. After that, Ken Giles came in to record the save.
  • Much like Friday night, all of Toronto’s offence came in one inning. Brandon Drury doubled, Billy McKinney drove him in with a single but then got thrown out trying to stretch it into a double, Toescar Hernandez walked, and Justin Smoak finally hit the first home run of the season for the Blue Jays. While the pitching has been excellent, the offence has left a lot to be desired. Though, it could be worse. We could be the Detroit Tigers who have all two of their runs on one swing in this season.
