The Blue Jays’ bullpen is depleated, so it makes sense that they’re claiming pitchers off waivers.
On Sunday, it was reported that the Blue Jays claimed José Cuas off waivers from the Chicago Cubs and optioned him to Triple-A Buffalo.
This season with the Cubs, the 29-year-old. who’ll turn 30 in less than a week, posted a 7.43 ERA and a 5.99 FIP in 13.1 innings pitched, along with a 21.5 K% and a 9.2 BB%. It’s been a rough season for the right-handed pitcher, who was designated for assignment on June 16. On top of that, he’s pitched 11.1 innings in the minors, posting a 6.35 ERA and a 2.81 FIP, along with a 45.3 K% and a 17 BB%.
Despite the rough season, Cuas has a track record of pitching well in the big leagues. Last season with the Kansas City Royals and the Cubs, he posted a 3.99 ERA and a 4.60 FIP in 65.1 innings pitched, along with a 24.3 K% and a 12 BB%. The year prior, he had a 3.58 ERA and a 4.39 FIP in 37.2 innings pitched.
The Blue Jays have shown interest in Cuas in the past, albeit a different management group. In the 2012 draft, the Jays selected Cuas with the 40th-round pick, but he elected to attend the University of Maryland. Moreover, the Jays selected him while he was an infielder.
Cuas was then selected in the 11th-round of the 2015 draft by the Milwaukee Brewers, where he spent his first three seasons as an infielder before making the switch to pitcher in 2018. As you may know, the Jays have a few position players turned pitchers, such as Hagen Danner and Sebastian Espino.
The 29-year-old has a four-pitch mix, a two-seamer, a four-seamer, a sweeper, and a changeup. His two fastballs sit in the low-90s, while featuring an 83 mph sweeper and an 87 mph changeup.
It’s to be seen if Cuas will get an opportunity with the Jays, but the way this bullpen has been tracking, he may well get a shot at some point in the near future.
