Spring training is just around the corner.
On Monday afternoon, the Blue Jays invited 19 minor leaguers not on the 40-man roster to spring training.
They invited pitchers Andrew Bash, Jimmy Burnette, Connor Cooke, Chad Dallas, Brandon Eisert, Mason Fluharty, Devereaux Harrison, Ryan Jennings, Hayden Juenger, and top Jays’ prospect Ricky Tiedemann.
For position players, the Jays invited Zach Britton, Phil Clarke, Cam Eden, Damiano Palmegiani, Will Robertson, Alan Roden, Brian Serven, and Andres Sosa.
Obviously, the most notable invitee is Tiedemann. The lefty pitched 44 innings between Single-A, Double-A, and Triple-A, and posted a 3.68 ERA and a 1.68 FIP. Tiedemann struck out 44.1% of batters he faced.
Other interesting pitching prospects include Cooke, who has a nasty wiffle ball slider and mid-90s fastball, Harrison, who converted into a starter with the High-A Vancouver Canadians, and Fluharty, a soft tossing lefty with a nasty slider.
Britton is a notable position player prospect for several reasons. For one, he is listed as a catcher instead of an outfielder. The other reason is that he missed the majority of the 2023 season, finishing with just 75 plate appearances with Double-A New Hampshire.
Roden had a great season in High-A and Double-A, slashing .317/.430/.459 with a 12.8 BB% and a 12 K% in 532 plate appearances. For any batter with over 100 plate appearances, his 149 wRC+ was the highest in the organization.
Palmegiani is another notable name, as all this guy can do is hit home runs. From 2021 to 2023, his 49 home runs rank third in the organization, behind just Orelvis Martinez and Addison Barger. Between Double-A and Triple-A, Palmegiani slashed .255/.364/.478 with 23 home runs in 557 plate appearances.
Pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training on February 14, with the full squad joining them on February 19. The Blue Jays will finally start their 2024 season on February 24 to kick off spring training.
Hang in there folks, the boys of summer are nearly here.
