This is a tough break for Danny Jansen.
Charlie Montoyo announced on Tuesday that Jansen is headed to the 10-day Injured List because of a fractured bone on his left hand.
This is the second time this season that Jansen has had a good stretch of play derailed due to an injury.
He started off the season going 4-for-7 with a pair of homers but was placed on the Injured List in mid-April because of an oblique injury. After missing about a month of play, Jansen returned and went 9-for-49 with five homers. All told, he’s slashing a .232/.290/.625 line for the season.
Coming up in place of Jansen won’t be Gabriel Moreno, the organization’s top prospect, it’ll be Zack Collins, who was sent down to the Buffalo Bisons a couple of weeks ago.
Collins, who was acquired in the off-season from the White Sox in exchange for Reese McGuire, had a short hot stretch in which he hit three homers in the span of seven games, but, outside of that, he hasn’t done much with the bat. In eight games in May, Collins went 1-for-19 and struck out 19 times.
He’s gone 3-for-29 with a pair of home runs over nine games in Triple-A this season.
The team expects Jansen to miss at least a couple of weeks, so it’ll be interesting to see how long they keep Moreno down if Collins isn’t hitting. Moreno is slashing a .323/.377/.406 line with the Bisons through 35 games this season.
