The Blue Jays have added David Phelps to the 40-man roster, meaning he’s made the team out of training camp.
Phelps was signed to a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training but it always seemed inevitable that he would be part of the team’s bullpen, especially now with rosters expanded to 28 players giving the team the option to carry 10 relievers.
In 10 1/3 innings last season with the Blue Jays, Phelps allowed just one earned run on eight hits and four walks while striking out 15. Phelps went on the Injured List in early May and didn’t return for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on his right lat.
The Blue Jays had two spots open on the 40-man roster after the Matt Chapman trade. Phelps fills one of them and the assumption is that Greg Bird will be the other one, though Dexter Fowler could also be in the mix.
Here’s how Toronto’s bullpen looks to be shaping up with one week to go until Opening Day: Jordan Romano, Adam Cimber, Trevor Richards, Yimi Garcia, Julian Merryweather, Nate Pearson, Ross Stripling, David Phelps, Ryan Borucki, and Tim Mayza.
