Roster moves!
The Blue Jays have activated Derek Fisher from the 10-day Injured List and they’ve called up Sean Reid-Foley from the Alternate Training Site. In corresponding moves, Sam Gaviglio and Travis Bergen have been optioned.
This is kind of a tough break for Bergen, who pitched quite well in relief on Tuesday in his Blue Jays debut (he picked up five outs, three of which were strikeouts) but such is life for a fringe pitcher with options.
Getting Fisher back will be a much-welcomed addition to the Blue Jays’ lineup. Though it’s a microscopic sample size, Fisher had three hits (a single, double, and triple) in and three walks in 15 trips to the plate this season before he got injured.
An interesting thing to consider is how Charlie Montoyo will operate if Travis Shaw isn’t available for a period of time. With Fisher back, he could feasibly use Fisher, Randal Grichuk and Teoscar Hernandez in the outfield and put Lourdes Gurriel on the left side of the infield. That would obviously be much better than using Brandon Drury or Joe Panik at third.
And then there’s Sean Reid-Foley, who will likely become Sean Reliever-Foley this year.
The plan for Reid-Foley was apparently to keep him stretched out to start, but given how his 2019 season went, it’s difficult to imagine there’s a starter there. Reid-Foley seems to have the stuff to be an excellent late-inning reliever. Hopefully, we get a chance to see him in that kind of role.
