Drew Hutchison is the Tigers’ scheduled starter against the Blue Jays on Sunday

It’s time for the Blue Jays to start winning some fucking games.

After putting together an amazing, seemingly season-changing stretch when they returned to Toronto, the Blue Jays hit the road to travel west and fell completely flat.

They split a four-game series with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, dropped two of three in Seattle and lost George Springer to an injury in the process, and then, worst of all, they capped the trip off by dropping both games in a two-game series with the lowly Washington Nationals, a team that traded away nearly everyone of note on their roster before the trade deadline.

At the beginning of September, the Blue Jays will play seven games that will ultimately go a long, long, loooooong way in deciding whether or not they’ll be able to make the playoffs. They host Oakland for three games and then they travel to the Bronx to play the Yankees four times.

These head-to-head games will be massive for the team to make up ground on two of the teams they’re chasing in the wild-card race. Before that, though, the Blue Jays have a prime opportunity to get hot and put pressure on those teams.

Next up, the Blue Jays will host the Detroit Tigers, a bad team, for three games. They’ll have a challenge after that facing the White Sox, but, at the very least, they’re at home for those four games. After that, it’s three in Detroit and then back to Toronto for three against Baltimore. That’s nine of 13 games against shitty teams before the Oakland New York stretch begins.

Of course, as we know, playing bad teams doesn’t automatically result in wins. We just saw that this week as the Blue Jays had a tough time dealing with the Nationals. But if you can’t beat the piss out of the Tigers and Orioles, then, well, you don’t deserve to be in the race, and that’s just the way it is.

Here’s the probable starters for this weekend…

Yes, that’s right. The Sunday starter for Detroit is none other than Blue Jays Legend Drew Hutchison.

What a ride it’s been for this guy. Hutch was the Blue Jays’ Opening Day starter in 2015, somehow won 13 games that season despite posting a 5.57 ERA, and was traded to the Pirates in exchange for Francisco Liriano, Reese McGuire, and Harold Ramirez in 2016.

Since getting traded to the Pirates, Hutch has bounced to the Dodgers, Phillies, Rangers, Yankees, Twins, and Angels. His start last week against Cleveland, in which he allowed six runs (two earned) in one-and-two-thirds innings, was his first in the big leagues since August of 2018.

I know it sounds dramatic, but if the Blue Jays can’t beat Drew Hutchison on Sunday, we can stick a fork in 2021.
