Such a great day on the mound from Alek Manoah gone to waste.

While it may not have had some of the fireworks we should anticipate every time Manoah’s on the mound opposite Gerritt Cole and the Yankees, he looked every part himself that we’ve seen in 2021 and 2022. He threw seven innings while only giving up two hits, no runs, one walk, and five strikeouts, and found himself in a bit of a jam in the 3rd, but worked his way out of it.

He was locating pitches and limiting walks — both items he’s struggled with this season. It’s great news for The Big Man, and it’s a real shame the bullpen failed him.

Nonetheless, we’re back at it today as the Jays look to close out this series with a win. Kevin Gausman will go up against Clarke Schmidt, who has had his fair share of struggles this season for the Yankees. It’s good news for the Jays, however, as with Daulton Varsho batting cleanup, they’re looking to expose a matchup.

As noted by our own Thomas Hall, Schmidt is throwing 38% cutters to left-handed batters this season, and last year, Varsho mashed against cutters with a .429 AVG, .905 SLG, .564 wOBA & +7 RV statline.
