The Toronto Blue Jays are betting favorites on the MLB odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com for Tuesday night, but they’ll be up against an opponent that is off to a surprisingly solid start to the shortened 2020 season while they’ve been sputtering to date.
The Blue Jays are set as -164 favorites at ‘home’ for Tuesday night at online sports betting sites, with the Miami Marlins the +142 underdogs. The Marlins were expected to be NL East division doormats this season, but they’ve managed to get the win in seven of their 10 games.
Toronto enters this short two-game series at Buffalo’s Sahlen Field after dropping two of three games to the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park over the weekend, and losing two of three games on the road to the Atlanta Braves before that. Overall the Blue Jays are just 5-8 to start the season, scoring just 39 runs overall in those 13 contests.
However, the Blue Jays will send Hyun-jin Ryu (1-1, 5.14 ERA) to the mound for Tuesday’s contest, and he’s coming off a strong outing on the road against the Braves in which he gave up just one hit over five shutout innings to record his first victory of the season. The lefthander had allowed eight earned runs over nine total innings in his first two outings of the year against the Rays and the Nationals. Ryu has struck out 17 batters while walking seven.
The Marlins will counter with Elieser Hernandez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) on Tuesday, with the righthander having held the Orioles scoreless on two hits over 4 1-3 innings in his first start of the season on August 5. Hernandez struck out five batters while walking just one that game.
Wednesday’s game will then see the Blue Jays send Nate Pearson (0-0, 2.70 ERA) to the mound to take on the Marlins’ Jordan Yamamoto (0-0, 9.00 ERA). Pearson threw five shutout innings against the Nationals in his season debut back on July 29, and followed up by allowing three earned runs on two hits over five innings against the Braves last week.
Toronto and Miami last met back in late August of 2018, with the Blue Jays winning two of three games in that road series. Overall the Blue Jays are 7-3 in their last 10 games against the Marlins dating back to 2009, according to the OddsShark MLB Database. The OVER/UNDER went 6-3-1 for totals bettors at the sportsbooks during that stretch.
