Sunday’s action will be the last for the four “affiliates” until Friday thanks to the All-Star break.
It hasn’t been a great start to the second-half for the two upper-minor teams, but the Vancouver Canadians continued to roll, so that’s good at least.
Let’s dig into what happened on Sunday, as well as what’ll happen with the Minor League Report throughout the upcoming week.

Buffalo shutout Lehigh Valley

It was a low scoring affair for the Buffalo Bisons, as they defeated the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 1-0 to bring their second-half record to 5-13. Sadly, that is still the worst record in the International League, while their -44 run differential is the second worst.
Damiano Palemgiani hit a go-ahead home run in the top of the seventh, the game’s only run. In fact, it was only one of two hits for the Bisons, as Alan Roden had a single in the top of the sixth, followed by a Cam Eden walk. Riley Tirotta was the only other player to reach base.
Chad Dallas had one of his best starts of the season, finishing with a line of 4 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K to bring his season ERA at the level to 6.43. Mike Mayers was the first out of the bullpen, allowing two hits but pitching a scoreless inning. Beau Sulser picked up the win, striking out a batter in an inning of work.
José Cuas picked up his second hold of the season while walking a batter and allowing a hit. Hayden Juenger earned his second save of the season, striking out three in two innings of work.

New Hampshire held to two runs

Like the Buffalo Bisons, the second-half for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats hasn’t gone well, and their 3-2 loss on Sunday made matters worse. So far, they have a 3-13 record and are already 7.5 games back of the division lead.
It was a quiet day for the bats, as they totaled just four hits. However, Andrés Sosa hit his third home run of the season, while Rainer Nuñez hit two singles. Cade Doughty had the other team’s hit, also a single.
Lazaro Estrada started and finished with a line of 4 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K to bring his ERA at the level to 4. Hunter Gregory pitched two innings in relief with a walk and a strikeout, while Adrián Hernández struck out a batter in his inning of work. Jimmy Burnette struck out a batter and allowed two hits, but didn’t allow a run. Ryan Boyer struck out two in a clean inning of work.

Vancouver wins again

The Vancouver Canadians have not felt the same problems plaguing the upper-minor teams, as they won 7-4 on Sunday to bring their second-half record to 16-5. As it stands, they are currently tied with Spokane for the Northwest lead.
Funnily enough, Vancouver had more hits than the other three affiliates combined, totaling 16 hits. Peyton Williams hit his fourth home run at the High-A level, and he’s been a big reason for their great second half. Dasan Brown hit a double and had a three-hit game, while Jace Bohrofen had a three-hit game with three singles.
Je’Von Ward had a two-hit game, both doubles, while Estiven Machado and Marcos De La Rosa each had a double and a single. Jean Arnaez also had a double, while Jackson Hornung and Nick Goodwin each had a single.
Pat Gallagher started for Vancouver and had a strong outing, finishing with a line of 5 IP, 3 H, 0 ER (1 R), 1 BB, 6 K to bring his season ERA to 4.45. Carson Pierce continued to pitch well for the Canadians, striking out two in his inning of work. Alex Amalfi struck out a batter in his inning of work.
Conor Larkin has had a terrific season, but gave up two earned runs in his inning of work, while Naswell Paulino gave up two walks and an earned run in his third of an inning. Aaron Munson picked up a save, striking out the two batters he faced.

Dunedin’s comeback falls short

Sadly, the Dunedin Blue Jays were unable to win, as they fell 9-5 to the Tampa Tarpons. Thankfully, they’re still in the hunt for the Florida State League West lead, as they are just 1.5 games back with a 11-9 record in the second-half.
The big story of this game is that Arjun Nimmala hit his sixth home run of the season. Since he was demoted (and later promoted) on June 3, the Jays’ 2023 first round pick is slashing .282/.398/.662 with four homers between the Florida Complex League and Single-A.
Byrce Arnold and Yhoangel Aponte each hit a double, while Robert Robertis had the team’s only multi-hit game. Nicolas Deschamps and Edward Duran each had a single as well.
As for their pitching, Juanmi Vasquez made the start, finishing with a line of 2.1 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 5 K with two home runs given up to bring his Single-A ERA to 4.44. Luis Torres made his Single-A debut, and gave up three earned runs in an inning and a third.
Julio Ortiz, also making his Single-A debut, gave up four walks and an earned run, but didn’t allow an earned run. Nate Gakow struck out two in two innings and a third, while Eliander Alcalde struck out three and gave up an earned run in two innings of work.

Up next

The Minor League Report will continue throughout the All-Star week. Instead of just looking at the rookie league teams, we’ll also look at each of the four affiliate teams individually.
