The Blue Jays have an interesting off-season ahead of them, as the team already has roughly $123 million committed to eight players on their 2023 payroll with 13 names eligible to go to arbitration this winter.
MLB Trade Rumours released its annual arbitration projections on Monday, and here’s what they have for the Blue Jays…
- Vladimir Guerrero Jr: $14.8 million
- Teoscar Hernandez: $14.1 million
- Bo Bichette: $6.1 million
- Raimel Tapia: $5.2 million
- Jordan Romano: $4.4 million
- Danny Jansen: $3.7 million
- Adam Cimber: $3.2 million
- Cavan Biggio: $2.6 million
- Santiago Espinal: $2.1 million
- Tim Mayza: $1.9 million
- Trevor Richards: $1.5 million
- Bradley Zimmer: $1.3 million
- Trent Thornton: $1.1 million
Upgrades are clearly needed after the Blue Jays were swept in the wild-card round but the financial commitments are starting to stack up. Simply bringing back all of the arb-eligible players and making no other additions would mean the Blue Jays have a higher payroll in 2023 than they did in 2022.
Might we see the team move on from Teoscar Hernandez with just one year left before he can hit free agency? Are names like Raimel Tapia, Cavan Biggio, and Santiago Espinal going to stick around as they get more expensive? Could Danny Jansen be the odd man out in the catching situation?
