It’s been a long road. Spring training began in late-February much to our excitement, but dragged out for what seemed like forever. Today is the final tuneup before the regular season begins, and after the game, we’ll also find out which players will be making the team for the season opener on Monday.
It appears Mike Bolsinger and Aaron Loup will make up the final two bullpen roles, which makes sense because Ryan Tepera has options whereas Bolsinger doesn’t.
Then there’s this Upton vs Goins thing that doesn’t make too much sense to me. The Jays seem to be very enamoured with Ryan Goins, who, while likeable as a utility guy with a great glove, simply doesn’t have as much upside or value to his particular roster as Upton, who can play all three outfield positions quite well. Keeping Goins and jettisoning Upton would mean the Jays have Zeke Carrera, Kevin Pillar, and Jose Bautista as their three outfielders, with Steve Pearce likely getting many reps out in left. That’s very bad. Very, very bad. Don’t be dumb, Blue Jays.
