The trade winds are blowing.
And with nearly 24 hours until the deadline, MLB Network’s Jon Morosi was on the FAN590 Monday where he was talking about what the Jays are up to.
When asked about Juan Soto being a potential trade target for the Jays, Morosi said Toronto has “dipped their toes” into trade conversations, but believed it to be more of an offseason move, if at all.
“With respect to what the package would be, I believe based on what I’ve been told the last couple days, that the Jays maybe dipped their toe in there, there’s some interest, but they’re not significantly involved on Soto at the moment. What I believe to be involved, they would have to trade Bo Bichette. He would have to be the piece.
“They need right now position players, and I think from the Nationals’ perspective, they would rather have Bo than Teoscar (Hernandez) or (Lourdes) Gurriel. I think that’s probably where they’re at right now.
“I think where the Jays are now, unless you are able to make a second move that brings in a shortstop you like, I would have a hard time seeing (it happen).”
A starting pitcher and a left-hand at the plate continue to be top targets for the Jays, Morosi noted, and Soto would fit at least one of those bills. If Soto isn’t moved ahead of Tuesday night, I think it’s safe to say the Jays will be one of those teams heavily involved in trade discussions this offseason.
Morosi penned later on Twitter that the Jays could put together a “competitive offer” for Tigers starter Tarik Skubal, so that will be one to keep an eye on, as well.
