The Blue Jays roster is starting to get back to normal. Prior to tonight’s series-opener against the Detroit Tigers, the Jays will activate Randal Grichuk and Aledmys Diaz from the 10-day disabled list.
Though nothing is official yet, one would assume that this means Dwight Smith Jr. and Gio Urshela are going to be removed from the 25-man roster. Smith has options and can go down to Buffalo, but Urshela will likely be designated for assignment.
Urshela, who’s here simply to fill a roster spot while Richard Urena and Lourdes Gurriel develop in the minors, has just four hits in 31 plate appearances. Smith has actually been quite good in the Major Leagues this year as he’s slashing a .300/.382/.533 line through 32 plate appearances.
Getting Diaz into the lineup won’t be difficult as he’ll become the everyday shortstop again, but how the Jays decide to use Grichuk will be more interesting. Teoscar Hernandez was the one who originally kind of shoved him out of the lineup, but, after a hot April, Hernandez has cooled in May. One of Grichuk and Hernandez will continue to play each day while one will likely platoon with Curtis Granderson.
Neither Grichuk or Diaz were hitting well when they hit the DL. Let’s hope that things turn around.
