With Opening Day just hours away, ESPN’s Buster Olney reported that the Toronto Blue Jays once again offered their superstar first baseman a deal. There is still a gap between the two sides.

Does that mean a deal won’t get done before he reaches free agency? Absolutely not. Guerrero Jr. set a deadline for the start of Spring Training. However, the two parties were <a href="https://twitter.com/shidavidi/status/1891841463748563437">“no where close” according to Guerrero Jr</a>. They&#8217;ve both shown a willingness to negotiate past that deadline.

And then the leaks came. Through <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6194664/2025/03/11/vladimir-guerrero-blue-jays-contract-demand/">The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Guerrero Jr. wants $500 million in present-day value</a>. On the other hand, the Blue Jays offered the 26-year-old a $500 million contract, but with a present-day value worth $400-$450 million according to <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/03/11/sports/blue-jays-contract-offer-to-vladimir-guerrero-jr-revealed/">New York Post’s Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman</a>.
In his press conference on Wednesday, Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said he is hopeful an extension will get done. Hopefully, it’s sooner rather than later, as this contract negotiation will hang over the Blue Jays&#8217; heads for the entirety of the season.
If Guerrero Jr. truly wants upwards of $500 million when he reaches free agency at the end of the season, he must have another season like last year. The first baseman slashed .323/.396/.544 with 30 home runs in 697 plate appearances for a 165 wRC+. This was the second time he’s had a superstar season, as in 2021 he slashed .311/.401/.601 with 48 home runs in 698 plate appearances for a 166 wRC+.
Sandwiched in between those two years was a good season in 2022 (132 wRC+ and a mediocre season in 2023 (118 wRC+). If he has a season like 2023, he can forget about a $500 million extension, as it would mean he’s failed to show consistency throughout his career.
Hopefully, an extension gets done before the start of the season or early into it to put an end to this saga.
