Series Recap: A Canada Day Weekend Spit

5 years agoThe Jays won the first two to push Detroit to a 10-game losing streak, but then dropped the second two as the Tigers remembered how to play baseball.
What happened?
On Friday, Marcus Stroman put together his best outing of the season, going seven innings while surrendering just one earned run. The Jays were able to get three across on old pal Francisco Liriano, which was good enough to earn Stroman his first win of 2018. 3-2 Blue Jays.
On Saturday, the Jays relied on one big inning and a walk-off home run to take the second game of the series. They tagged Matt Boyd for three runs in the fifth and then didn’t do anything until Justin Smoak hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth. 4-3 Blue Jays.
On Sunday, J.A. Happ was cruising before randomly imploding in the fifth inning. He loaded the bases, allowed an infield bunt single, and then a grand slam which completely busted things open fro Detroit. 9-1 Tigers.
On Sunday, Ryan Borucki was excellent in his second-career start, but the offence was completely invisible. The Jays rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth but ended up losing in 10 innings. 3-2 Tigers.
Things worth mentioning…
- The star of the weekend for Toronto was Ryan Borucki. He tossed a damn gem, going seven innings while allowing just two earned runs. He allowed four singles in the first inning but managed to get out of it allowing just one run. He also calmly executed his own ground-ball-throw-home double play, which was impressive given the fact the game looked like it was going to get away from him early. After that, Borucki was totally in control, mowing the Tigers down over the next six innings. He got tagged for an earned run in the sixth inning though it ultimately came down to Lourdes Gurriel messing up a double play ball. Ultimately, it was an excellent game for Borucki who showed poise and an excellent control of the strike zone. He didn’t look like he was making the second start of his big league career, that’s for sure.
- Marcus Stroman was also a positive this weekend. He finally picked up his first win after shutting down the Tigers over the span of seven innings. Though 2018 has been a disaster for him, Stroman looks like 2017 Stroman now that he’s healthy.
- Could this have been J.A. Happ’s final game as a Blue Jay? Given the fact he had his bobblehead giveaway on Monday, the window to trade him seems wide open.
- Kendrys Morales ended up at third base in the 10th inning of Sunday’s game. The Jays are winless in 2018 in games in which Kendrys plays third base.
