Series Recap: Blue Jays reward fans who invaded Seattle

5 years agoThe Blue Jays took three of four in Seattle this weekend and the home crowd went home happy.
What happened?
On Thursday, it looked like the Jays were waving the white flag with Tyler Clippard scheduled to make the series-opening start. Clippard would allow a couple runs in one inning, then some guy literally nobody had heard of named Mike Hauschild tossed six scoreless frames in relief for the win. Sure! 7-3 Blue Jays.
On Friday, Ryan Borucki finally earned his first big league win. He went eight innings without surrendering an earned run while scattering just four hits. The offence also finally gave him some run support, though he didn’t really need it at all. 7-2 Blue Jays.
On Saturday, Marco Estrada followed up Borucki with another ridiculously good start. Estrada flirted with a no-hitter into the seven inning and ultimately went seven frames allowing just one earned run. 5-1 Blue Jays.
On Sunday, the Jays failed to earn the sweep. Aledmys Diaz hit a two-run homer to tie the game in the seventh inning, but Joe Biagini allowed back-to-back homers in the bottom half to throw it away. 6-3 Mariners.
Things worth mentioning…
- There was a lot to like in this series. Obviously the best part in regards to individual performances was Borucki’s ridiculously good outing on Friday night. He had been good enough to win multiple games already, but eight innings without an earned run (one unearned) finally got him that win. He honestly looks like the ace of the staff at this point which is incredible given the fact I don’t think anyone figured he’d be pitching here until September.
- The offence was spread around nicely over the course of this series. Kendrys Morales had a clutch homer on Thursday and suddenly his wRC+ is 106 on the season, Randal Grichuk and Aledmys Diaz have worked their way into the ~.750 OPS category, and Devon Travis was smacking extra base hits like it was 2015.
- It’s great to see the Jays perform well in front of their home crowd because, ya know, going to Seattle is essentially home. A few years ago, the tradition of heading down to Seattle for Western Canadian fans wasn’t that big of a deal, it was just a chance to watch the Jays in a nice place easier to get to than Toronto. Now, though, invading Seattle has become an annual tradition, and the more Mariners fans piss themselves over it, the better it gets.
Or you can, uh, fill up your stadium with your own fans. Sorry your team is in a playoff race, well, in a playoff collapse, and nobody gives a shit about it.
Whatever happens, you can feel free to absolutely cover yourself in your own piss on the internet. The only thing more sad than Mariners fans on twitter is how the Mariners have looked on the field over the past couple months.
Remember when your pitcher threw a no-hitter in our stadium and we got up and gave him a standing ovation? This is a really roundabout way to ask for your diaper to be changed.
Of course, I don’t want to generalize all Mariners fans and I don’t want to suggest that Blue Jays fans are all saints, either. Most Mariners fans are understanding that getting to Seattle in much easier than getting to Toronto for many of us and this invasion is simply one annual opportunity to actually wact the team live. Anyways, see ya next summer, Seattle. Thanks for the good times!
