Aaron Sanchez will take the mound today just a few short hours after his agent, Scott Boras, created a media shit-storm around his league-minimum contract. Spring ball!

News and Scuttlebutt

There appears to be storm brewing. It isn’t uncommon for a player like Sanchez who hasn’t yet reached his arbitration years to be paid virtually nothing. This isn’t necessarily a Blue Jays being shitty thing as much at it is Major League Baseball’s structure heavily favouring the veteran while the youngster gets slammed. For reference, Noah Syndergaard, who we all know very well, former member of the Lansing Three along with Sanchez, was re-upped this year for just a shade over $600k.
So it’s hard to take this as much more than Sanchez’s agent Scott Boras making a fuss for potential leverage down the road, because that’s just what he does, and it’s why he’s probably the best agent in all of baseball and has been for some time. That said, an interesting point by Ben Nicholson-Smith, is that Sanchez sacrificed $11,500 in salary last summer when he took a demotion to Single-A Dunedin because he had options and was being skipped in starts to navigate through his innings limit.
I won’t go any further than that in analysis because I feel like this is a standard thing, and is a non-issue that will likely be sured with a long-term deal if Sanchez has another strong season, but it’s certainly something to keep an eye on.
Anyways! On to some more good news, as both Devon Travis and Josh Donaldson are going to be getting at-bats in a minor league spring game today. I don’t think there’s any concern about Donaldson’s health now, as it’s been suggested he’ll certainly *knock on wood* be ready for the beginning of the season, but Travis is still up in the air, and could begin 2017 on the 10-Day Disabled List.
