The Ricky Tiedemann Report: The young Blue Jays’ prospect hits his first speed bump
7 months ago
Speed bumps exist, as we learned on Tuesday evening.
It was only one of like three times that Ricky Tiedemann struggled in a game since turning pro. Pitching against the Hartford Yard Goats, the 20-year-old left-handed pitcher had a line of 2.1 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 5 K. Furthermore, Tiedemann only threw 58 pitches, which means his pitch count is still likely 60, which was the same for his previous start.
It’s also worth noting that he only allowed one earned run while pitching, while the pitcher that came in for him allowed consecutive hits for the other three earned runs. Perhaps he could have gotten out of it if he hadn’t reached his pitch count.
However, there was definitely some good from this start, as his fastball touched at least 98 mph, as you can see on this first strikeout.
Moreover, the slider’s sweeping motion worked well, as he used it as an out pitch on three of the five batters he had faced. Here’s the entire whiff and strikeout edit I made last night.
The second positive thing to take away from this start is that Tiedemann has a chance to face adversity. Everyone knows that when he is at his best, he is borderline unhittable, but what about after he struggles as he did on Tuesday? His next start (which I presume will be Sunday) will be a big test. He’ll also have a chance at redemption as the Fisher Cats will still be playing the Yard Goats.
As for his season totals, he has pitched 10 innings, allowing five earned runs (5 ERA), six walks (15 BB%), 20 strikeouts (50 K%) and he has a FIP of 1.17 according to my math.
Development is non-linear, and even the best pitchers in history occasionally get hit. His sparkling FIP is an indication that he’s on the right path, even if his 5 ERA is on the high side.
