The top prospect in the Toronto Blue Jays system has landed on the Injured List in the minor leagues.
According to the team’s transaction page, the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons have placed left-handed pitcher Ricky Tiedemann on the seven-day Injured List. The type of injury and how long Tiedemann is expected to be out are currently unknown.
Injuries have unfortunately gotten in the way of the young lefty’s progression as a prospect. Selected by the Blue Jays out of Junior College in the third round of the 2021 MLB Draft, Tiedemann immediately made a name for himself in his first professional season, as he posted a 2.17 ERA in 78 2/3 innings with the Dunedin Blue Jays, Vancouver Canadians, and New Hampshire Fisher Cats in 2022.
Tiedemann came into the 2023 season ranked the No. 31 prospect on Baseball America’s Top 100 list and the No. 32 prospect on MLB Pipeline’s list. The lefty made five starts for Double-A New Hampshire before going on the Injured List with a biceps issue. He returned to the Fisher Cats in August and made seven starts with the team before being called up to Triple-A Buffalo for one start in September.
All told, Tiedemann posted a 3.68 ERA in 44 innings between Dunedin, New Hampshire, and Buffalo in 2023. He joined the Surprise Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League and put up a 2.50 ERA across 18 innings in four starts.
Tiedemann was scheduled to start Toronto’s first Spring Training game this year but was scratched with left hamstring discomfort. He wound up making three appearances for the Blue Jays in Grapefruit League play, scattering four earned runs over six-and-two-thirds innings with eight strikeouts.
The organization’s top prospect was assigned to Triple-A Buffalo to start the season and went two-and-two-thirds innings as their Opening Day starter. Tiedemann made two more starts for the Bisons but hasn’t pitched since April 11 because of this injury. Through three appearances in 2024, the lefty has allowed five earned runs over eight innings with 10 strikeouts and nine walks.
