Troy Tulowitzki Heads To The DL, The Rob Refsnyder Era Begins

On the two-year anniversary of the mega trade that brought Troy Tulowitzki to Toronto, the veteran shortstop went down with an ankle sprain. Something about that is fitting.

Just as we expected, Tulo will head to the 10-day disabled list and will have an MRI later on to determine the severity of the injury. Coming up in his place will be Rob Refsnyder, the utility player acquired from the Yankees last week.

Tulo has had a disappointing season to say the least. He still has a very good glove at short, but his offence has completely dried up. The 32-year-old is slashing a .249/.300/.378 line through 260 plate appearances this season, a far cry from his days as one of the game’s most feared hitters in Colorado.

Refsnyder has produced well in Triple-A this season. Through 174 plate appearances between Buffalo and Scranton, Refsnyder has posted an .869 OPS. That hasn’t translated to the majors at all, though, as the former Yankees prospect had an even-worse-than-Goins .416 OPS in New York this season. He doesn’t play short, so we’ll likely see Goins filling in Tulo’s role while Refsnyder splits second base with Darwin Barney.

In another move, the Jays have activated Mike Bolsinger from the 10-day disabled list and have optioned reliever Chris Smith to Buffalo. Bolsinger last pitched in the 15-inning game in Boston a couple weeks ago and was sidelined with inflammation in his knee.
