Holy hell, baseball is most certainly back. The Blue Jays picked up a 3-2 win over the Yankees in an extra-innings nail-biter. That’s absolutely what you love to see.

Things worth mentioning…

  • Hyun Jin Ryu got the ball for the Blue Jays and went toe-to-toe with the second-best free-agent pitching addition from the 2019 off-season, Gerrit Cole. Ryu spun five-and-one-third innings in which his only blemish was a two-run home run to Gary Sanchez in the second inning. All told, Ryu allowed four hits and one walk while striking out five. He had the Yanks looking confused and off-balance, vintage Ryu.
  • The Blue Jays’ bullpen locked things down after that, though there were some stressful moments. Tyler Chatwood got the final two outs of the sixth after Ryu was pulled, David Phelps navigated a couple of hits and a walk, Rafael Dolis allowed a walk but had an otherwise clean inning, and then Jordan Romano worked around two walks with help from Cavan Biggio, who made a great play to nab what would have been the game-winning run at home.
  • There wasn’t a hell of a lot to talk about offensively today. The Jays scored a run in the second when Vlad, Teoscar, and Gurriel hit back-to-back-to-back singles and Teoscar smashed a solo dinger in the sixth to knot the game up at 2-2.
  • Vlad had himself a pretty damn good day at the plate, all told. His single off of Cole was mashed at 114 miles-per-hour, the hardest hit of the game, and he also took two walks.
  • Finally, Randal Grichuk gave the Jays the lead in the 10th inning thanks to the runner-on-second rule. Jonathan Davis started at second and Grichuk drove him home with a double. After that, Julian Merryweather came in and absolutely dominated, striking out Aaron Hicks, Giancarlo Stanton, and Gleyber Torres on 11 pitches. Just filthy, filthy stuff.
  • That was a great win so I don’t want to complain about stuff, but I have to mention Danny Jansen bunting in the 10th inning with Grichuk on second. What the hell is that???? He also tried to bunt with two strikes??? WHY??? Stop this madness!
  • Anyways! It was big for the Jays to win the Ryu start because Ross Stripling and T.J. Zeuch are apparently starting on Saturday and Sunday, which, uhhhhh, might be a bit of a challenge! But, for now, we’re undefeated. Fuck yeah.
