George Springer is a Toronto Blue Jay.
And on Sunday afternoon, Springer got the bats started for the Jays by crushing his 50th career leadoff home run.
Down 1-2 in the count Minnesota Twins pitcher threw a 92.2 mph 4-seam fastball in the top of the zone and Springer got every bit of it, sending the ball 433-feet into the second deck at the Rogers Centre.
The dinger was Springer’s seventh lead off of the year — a stat that already has set a league record and it’s only June 5th. It also leads the league, and places him just six back of Alfonso Soriano’s record 13.
With Springer hitting his 50th, it now places him fourth all-time on the leadoff home run list. He trails Craig Biggo at 53, the aforementioned Soriano at 54, and the legendary Rickey Henderson, with 81. While Springer’s pace is likely unsustainable through the season, he should be able to get to the 55 mark at some point.
Springer’s had a good start to his year slashing .276/.347/.523 with a .870 OPS, 11 home runs and a team-leading 30 RBI.
