Here’s something I never thought I’d be writing back when the Blue Jays traded a minor leaguer for utility infielder Cliff Pennington in August of 2015: Dawel Lugo was in the news this week. It seems that after two seasons of solid development in the Arizona Diamondbacks system, Lugo turned himself into something of a commodity — though maybe not enough of one to satisfy fans in Detroit — as he was the headliner among a trio of prospects heading to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for outfielder J.D. Martinez.
The Lugo-for-Pennington deal was very much an afterthought in the wake of the franchise-shifting moves former Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos made two summers ago. But looking around at how all the players the Blue Jays moved have done since they were traded, he’s one of the few bright spots.
Jimmy Cordero and Alberto Tirado were traded that summer to the Philadelphia Phillies for Ben Revere. Cordero is already out of the organization (he was picked up by the Nationals in a small deal last November after being designated for assignment), while Tirado has finally made it to double-A after a rocky trip through A-ball.
