The Toronto Blue Jays are starting to look like themselves again. No lead for an opposing team feels safe, as the bats are finally starting to come through in the clutch.

Down 3-1 in the fifth inning of Tuesday’s contest, the Blue Jays were able to break through against southpaw Patrick Sandoval via a Charles McAdoo sacrifice fly and Brett Bateman RBI single, tying the game 3-3. Previously, Bateman had driven in a run in the third inning on an RBI double, scoring Nathan Lukes, producing two of the Jays’ first three runs of the game. An Ernie Clement RBI fielder’s choice groundout and Myles Straw double added two insurance runs, and the bullpen shut down the Red Sox the rest of the way, securing a 5-3 victory.

It was a shaky night for Dylan Cease, coming off a stellar outing in Chicago against the Cubs that extended his scoreless inning streak on the road to 36. Against the Red Sox, the Jays ace went just five innings, throwing 104 pitches and allowing three runs and four walks, to pair with seven strikeouts. Tuesday’s game was the first time Cease walked four or more batters in a game since June 27th at home against the Texas Rangers. He’ll look to dial in the command his next time out against the Yankees at home this weekend. Spencer Miles collected his first career MLB save, working a clean ninth inning, needing just 14 pitches.

The Jays now sit just five games back of .500, at a 58-63 record, up to fourth in the American League East and just 2.5 games back of the final Wild Card spot. Though the road continues to be tough given how many other teams they would need to fend off to enter the playoff picture, they’ve now surpassed the struggling Seattle Mariners and Baltimore Orioles, leaving four teams ahead of them at the present date.

José Soriano makes his second start as a Blue Jay since being acquired from the Los Angeles Angels at the trade deadline, coming off a solid first showing against the Phillies in Philadelphia. Soriano went 4.2 innings, allowing just one run on four hits to pair with three strikeouts, inducing a season-high 18 whiffs. It is important to note that Soriano had 12 days between starts heading into his outing against the Phillies, and should provide more length in his second outing with Toronto.
