Adam Macko is one of the newest additions to the 40-man roster, as the Blue Jays wanted to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft.

This is the 40-man Roster Review, in which we’re going to take a look back at each player on the Blue Jays’ 40-man roster, and how they performed in 2023, as well as their outlook for 2024.
It was just over a year ago that the Blue Jays acquired Macko in a deal with the Seattle Mariners, when they sent Teoscar Hernández to Canada’s second team in return for the left-handed prospect and Erik Swanson.
The 22-year-old had a career-worst 4.81 ERA and a 3.97 FIP in 86 innings pitched this past season, but there were definitely some positives from his 2023. For starters, the 86 innings were by far the most in his career, as between 2019 and 2022, he had only 95 innings under his belt due to injury, along with a handful during the 2022 Arizona Fall League.

Macko&#8217;s second positive sign from the 2023 season was the drop in his walk rate. Prior to his 10.8 BB%, which is still on the high side, Macko’s career-low was an 11.7 BB% in his rookie season in 2019. While the strikeout rate dropped to a still impressive 28.5 K% (down from 35.9% the season prior), the fact he was healthy throughout the season and dropped his walk rate is an encouraging sign.
Furthermore, there’s also the encouraging sign that was the second half of his season. From July 26th to the end of the season, Macko had a 2.51 ERA and a 2.50 FIP in 32.1 innings pitched, along with an insane 39.7 K%. However, his BB% did increase to 11.9% in this stretch.
What makes the left-handed pitcher so intriguing is his ability to get up to 97 mph with the fastball, averaging anywhere from 92 to 97 mph. That’s not even his best pitch though, as the slow looping curveball is considered his best pitch. He also features a nice slider and changeup, as well as a two-seam fastball.
Macko is still several seasons away from the big leagues, but if he can stay healthy and control his pitches, the Blue Jays could have a useful lefty in the middle of the rotation, or a high-leverage reliever.
