Blue Jays acquire right-handed pitcher Nick Robertson from Angels

You know the drill by now. We’ve got ourselves yet another new depth arm in the mix.
According to Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors, the Toronto Blue Jays claimed right-handed pitcher Nick Robertson from the Los Angeles Angels. The Halos designated Robertson for assignment on the weekend and there’s no word yet if the Blue Jays have made a corresponding roster move.
Born in Virginia, Robertson was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the seventh round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of James Madison University. After being called up to make his Major League debut with the Dodgers during the 2023 season, Robertson was traded to the Boston Red Sox along with a prospect for utility player Enrique Hernandez.
Between Los Angeles and Boston that season, Robertson made 18 relief appearances and posted a 6.04 ERA with 26 strikeouts and nine walks over 22 1/3 innings. In the off-season, Robertson was traded again, this time to St. Louis as part of the return for outfielder Tyler O’Neill.
The Cardinals called Robertson up to their big-league roster in late April and he posted a 4.38 ERA with 14 strikeouts and two walks over 12 1/3 innings. He was optioned to Triple-A in May and hasn’t been back to the Majors since.
In August, the Cardinals placed Robertson on waivers and he was claimed by the Angels, but Los Angeles never gave him a look in their bullpen. Robertson has options this season and next, so it seems likely he’ll join the Buffalo Bisons before potentially making his debut in Toronto before the season is over.
The bullpen is going to be a major area of focus this off-season for the Blue Jays. A combination of injuries and poor performances unravelled one of baseball’s best bullpens in 2023 into one of the worst in 2024. In order to be competitive in 2025, the front office can’t just assume bounceback and internal improvement will fix the team’s bullpen.
