Things worth mentioning…

• Kevin Gausman got the ball against his former team for the first time since signing with the Blue Jays in free agency. He was nearly perfect over six innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and one walk while striking out 12. Gausman’s one blip came in the fifth inning. Thairo Estrada hit a single, stole second, moved to third on a balk, and came home on a double from Patrick Bailey.
• After Gausman came out of the game, Nate Pearson tossed a scoreless seventh inning. He came out for the eighth and got one out before allowing a single. Erik Swanson came in and got a double play to finish off the eighth but he got tagged for two runs in the top of the ninth.
• Scoring even one run to tie the game felt like a massive challenge so the 3-0 lead seemed insurmountable. Matt Chapman, Daulton Varsho, and Whit Merrifield all struck out in the bottom of the ninth to finish off the game.
• The Blue Jays picked up eight hits in total but went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Their best performer at the plate was Bo Bichette, who went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles.
