The Toronto Blue Jays made a roster shakeup Wednesday evening.
On the main roster, the Blue Jays recalled Jonatan Clase to the 26-man roster and added Braydon Fisher to the 40-man and 26-man rosters. To make room for Fisher on the 40-man roster, Steward Berroa was designated for assignment. The Jays made two spots on the 26-man roster available by optioning both Alan Roden and Dillon Tate.
Starting with Fisher, the Blue Jays acquired him from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Cavan Biggio. In 11.1 innings pitched with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons this season, the 24-year-old has a 2.38 ERA and a 2.09 FIP, with a 29.8 K% and an 8.5 BB%. Hopefully, he can find the same success in the big leagues.
Clase has also had a hot start to his season with the Bisons, slashing .315/.419/.371 with five doubles in 106 plate appearances for a 129 wRC+. He made his season debut earlier this season, joining the Jays for a doubleheader in April. To end last season, Clase slashed .350/.435/.550 with a home run in 23 plate appearances.
Unfortunately, Berroa hasn’t found the same success as Clase. Through 24 games this season, the 26-year-old is slashing .195/.267/.234 with no home runs in 86 plate appearances for a 43 wRC+. It seems unlikely that he’ll be claimed, but he needs to get going if he wishes to join the Jays at some point this season.
Roden was added to the Jays’ 40-man roster and made the 26-man roster before the season started. After getting off to a good start in his first two weeks, Roden is slashing .000/.074/.000 in his last 27 plate appearances for a -80 wRC+. As sad as this move is, it’s needed as he’ll need to find his game again with the Bisons.
The Jays also optioned Dillon Tate to the Bisons. In five games this season, Tate has posted a 5.06 ERA and a 6.83 FIP in 5.1 innings pitched, with a 23.3 K% and a 20 BB%. Pretty rough stats, but he’ll surely be back on the Jays at some point this season.
