The Toronto Blue Jays made some roster moves.

On Monday morning, they officially signed Spencer Turnbull and José Ureña to major league deals, adding Ureña to the current 26-man roster and optioning Turnbull to the Florida Complex League. To make room for both players on the 40-man roster, Max Scherzer and Erik Swanson were retroactively placed on the 60-day Injured List. Josh Walker was optioned to Triple-A to make room for Ureña on the 26-man roster.

Ureña will give the Jays some length out of the bullpen, as he’s made 152 starts in 233 career appearances. His career numbers aren’t great, posting a 4.80 ERA and a 4.89 FIP in 951.1 innings, but Ureña had a solid 2024 with the Texas Rangers with a 3.80 ERA and a 4.62 FIP.

Turnbull’s career has been plagued by injuries, pitching in just 78 games in seven seasons. Last season, Turnbull made 17 appearances, seven starts, where he had a 2.65 ERA and a 3.85 FIP in 54.1 innings pitched. His only season with more than 100 innings pitched came in 2019 with the Detroit Tigers, where he had a 4.61 ERA and a 3.99 FIP in 148.1 innings pitched.
Burr hasn’t pitched this season as he’s been plagued by a shoulder injury. He’ll be eligible to come off the 60-day Injured List by the end of the month. Scherzer’s only start came on Mar. 29, meaning he’ll also be available to come off the 60-day Injured List by the end of the month. He’s been dealing with the thumb injury for a while now.
As for Walker, the left-handed pitcher posted a 7.20 ERA and a 1.67 FIP in five innings pitched this season, although he has a 32 K%.
Hopefully, these roster moves can help the Blue Jays start winning some games. On top of the lack of power (please sign J.D. Martinez already), the biggest reason for the Jays&#8217; 16-18 record is because of their bullpen and lack of a fifth starter. These two signings could help both problems.
