The Toronto Blue Jays have sent a homegrown prospect back to the farm.
Adam Macko was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday as the corresponding move for Dylan Cease’s activation off the injured list. Cease will make his first start since May 24 against the Pittsburgh Pirates, when he sustained a hamstring injury in the fifth inning.
Macko, 25, pitched well in his first major-league stint, recording a 1.50 ERA with 12 strikeouts and two walks over 12 innings. Born in Slovakia, the left-hander eventually moved to Alberta, where he was a standout at Vauxhall Academy of Baseball during his high school years.
Taking Macko off the roster leaves the Blue Jays with only one lefty in the bullpen, Mason Fluharty, limiting their relief options against the left-hand-hitting heavy lineups of the Phillies and New York Yankees, who the Blue Jays will play in a three-game series starting Friday.
Fluharty’s 31 relief appearances are tied with Louis Varland and Tyler Rogers for the Blue Jays’ lead.
However, there is more roster churn to come, as manager John Schneider announced that Max Scherzer will also return from the injured list for a start on Wednesday.
Recent trade acquisition Simeon Woods Richardson, who was designated for assignment by the Minnesota Twins, pitched well in his Blue Jays debut on Monday, displaying increased fastball velocity and a new pitch shape on the splitter he previously struggled with.
Reinforcements returning is unquestionably a welcome development for a Blue Jays pitching staff that is tied for third in innings pitched out of the bullpen. But it does come with awkward roster decisions.
