The Toronto Blue Jays announced on Wednesday that Julian Merryweather has been optioned to Triple-A Buffalo and that Foster Griffin has been recalled from the Bisons.
Merryweather was activated from the Injured List back on September 5 after he missed half of July and all of August because of a left abdominal strain. He fared well in his first five outings, scattering two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five over seven-and-two-thirds innings.
That solid run came to an end on Tuesday night in Philadelphia. Merryweather came into the game in the eighth inning with the Blue Jays up 14-5 over the Phillies and the righty was tagged for five earned runs and only recorded two outs before getting pulled in favour of David Phelps.
Coming up in place of Merryweather is left-handed pitcher Foster Griffin, who the Blue Jays acquired from the Kansas City Royals back in July. Griffin was selected by the Royals in the first round of the 2014 MLB Draft but has only logged six innings at the big league level in his career.
The 26-year-old has posted an impressive 2.01 ERA across 49 1/3 innings between the Blue Jays and Royals Triple-A teams in 2022 so he’s definitely earned his shot.
