Trey Yesavage made his professional debut, and it was a mixed bag.

Selected 20th overall in the 2024 draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, the right-handed pitcher appeared during the Blue Jays’ Spring Breakout game in March, but only made his actual professional debut on Tuesday.

It wasn’t great, in reality. Yesavage pitched three and two-thirds innings, giving up two runs, both unearned, while walking six and striking out four. He only gave up one hit in the game.

Of course, it didn’t help that the Dunedin Blue Jays had long half-innings at the plate. In the second inning, they hung a four spot, in the third inning, they hung a seven spot, before another four spot in the fourth inning. By the time Yesavage left, the D-Jays had accumulated 15 walks in four innings, and the Jupiter Hammerheads&#8217; command didn&#8217;t get any better as the game went along.
Diving deeper into the stats, Yesavage threw his fastball 43 times, or 63% of the time. It generated four whiffs on 12 total swings for a 33 whiff %, while averaging 93.6 mph, maxing out at 95.2 mph.
His secondary pitches also found success, the changeup generating three whiffs on six total swings while his cutter generated two whiffs on four total swings. Overall, he had a 41 whiff %, a great number.
Yesavage’s start felt similar to his Spring Breakout performance. In his first inning, he recorded his first out with a flyout. However, Yesavage allowed the next two batters to reach on singles before getting two outs to end the inning. The second inning saw him strike out the side.
Of course, Yesavage struggled for more than one inning in this game, and that makes sense given that it’s his first professional start. I don’t know about you, but I’d be pretty amped up.
We’ll see what happens in his next start, but it won’t be surprising if Yesavage earns a promotion to High-A Vancouver after a few good starts. Let’s hope his next start turns out better than Tuesday’s.
