Cavan Biggio has a new home.

After being designated for assignment by the Blue Jays last week, the utility player has been acquired by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Heading back to Toronto in return is right-handed reliever Braydon Fisher, <a href="https://x.com/JeffPassan/status/1800880514930454851">according to ESPN&#8217;s Jeff Passan</a>.
The Blue Jays selected Biggio in the fifth round of the 2016 MLB Draft and he gained notoriety as a top prospect after winning Eastern League MVP while with the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats in 2018. He made his big-league debut in 2019 and finished fifth in American League Rookie of the Year voting after slashing a .234/.364/.429 line over 430 plate appearances.
Biggio had another strong showing for the Blue Jays during the shortened 2020 season but his numbers regressed considerably in the following years. Between 2021 and 2023, the lefty produced a .221 batting average and a .687 on-base plus slugging percentage, a decline from the .798 OPS he put up between 2019 and 2020.
There was optimism that Biggio had found his groove at the plate following a strong second half to the season in 2023 in which he posted a .272 batting average and a .765 OPS after the All-Star break, but that success didn&#8217;t translate into the 2024 campaign. Biggio put up a .200 batting average and a .614 OPS over the first couple of months of the season and the Blue Jays ultimately decided to move on so that they could make room on the roster for Spencer Horwitz.
Biggio will join a Dodgers team that badly needs some quality depth. Second baseman Gavin Lux has struggled to a .574 OPS this season while outfielder Chris Taylor owns a miserable .307 OPS. Third baseman Max Muncy has also been on the Injured List since mid-May with an oblique issue and it doesn&#8217;t appear that he&#8217;s going to be back any time soon.
In return for Biggio, the Blue Jays will receive a minor-league arm who isn&#8217;t on the 40-man roster. Right-hander Braydon Fisher was selected by the Dodgers in the fourth round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of high school and has since been converted from a starter into a reliever. Over 19 innings between Double-A and Triple-A this season, Fisher has a 5.68 ERA with 30 strikeouts and 15 walks.
