The trade deadline festivities have officially kicked off with a trade involving Canadian slugger Josh Naylor heading to the Seattle Mariners. In exchange, the Arizona Diamondbacks will acquire prospect pitchers Ashton Izzi and Brandyn Garcia.
The second half of the season has officially kicked off, and the Diamondbacks have accepted their path to the end of 2025.
They sit fourth in the National League West, 10 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Mariners sit five games behind the Houston Astros in the division and occupy the second AL Wild Card spot. Seattle is in the running for a pennant and postseason appearance. Naylor is a huge acquisition to assist their offensive situation.
Naylor’s addition to the Mariners’ lineup adds power to the lineup
Naylor will be a huge addition to the lineup in Seattle and in the infield. So far in 2025, the big first-basemen has slashed a .292/.360/.447. He has 102 hits, 11 home runs, 59 RBIs, 11 stolen bases, 37 walks, and 49 strikeouts.
Naylor will flash aggressiveness in the batter’s box with a violent swing and apprehensive approach. His stick from the left side can glide into most zones, making him a dangerous power-contact hitter. The first baseman is also a menace on the base paths, with above-average speed, and is very aggressive, reading pitchers well and taking advantage of slow pitching.
The Canadian slugger will be a free agent at the end of the season. His rental commitment in Seattle could raise his free agent stock value.
The Diamondbacks return
In return, Arizona receives two well-ranked prospects to assist their farm system needs. Ashton Izzi is a right-handed pitcher who is ranked 16th in the Mariners’ pipeline rankings. He was drafted in 2022 in the fourth round, 126th overall. The right-hander has a three-pitch mix with a fastball up to 97 mph, a low-80s sweeping-slider, and a changeup. He has made 12 starts in high-A Everett this year, posting a 5.51 ERA through 47 1/3 innings. Izzi missed the first month of the season due to injury.
The other player in the deal is a left-handed pitcher who is ranked 13th in the Mariners system. Brandyn Garcia was drafted in the 11th round of the 2023 MLB draft, 337th overall. The southpaw has a three-pitch mix, inclusive of a 96 mph fastball, a slider, and a cutter. He has appeared in two games for Seattle this season, allowing one earned run and four hits through two innings of relief.
