Jordan Romano has been named this year’s best Canadian baseball player.
The Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame announced on Tuesday morning that Romano is the 2022 Tip O’Neill Award winner, which is annually awarded to the Canadian baseball player who is “judged to have excelled in individual achievement and team contribution while adhering to the highest ideals of the game of baseball.
Romano, a native of Markham, Ontario was one of the best relief pitchers in the big leagues this season, as he posted a 2.11 ERA over 64 innings and picked up 36 saves over 63 appearances. He also represented the American League at the All-Star Game for the first time in his career in July.
This is the first time Romano has been named the Tip O’Neill Award winner and it’s the third time that a Blue Jay has won the award. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who was born in Montreal while his father was playing for the Montreal Expos, won last year, and Rob Butler won back in 1993.
Larry Walker has the most Tip O’Neill Award wins ever with nine and Joey Votto sits second with seven.
