A record-setting debut series is being honoured.

On Wednesday morning, it was announced by our very own Tyson Shushkewich writing for Canadian Baseball Network that the uniform that Davis Schneider wore for his debut series would be heading to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. Remember when the anemic Blue Jays offence needed a push, so they called up Davis Schneider for an early August series at Fenway Park? Well, the 24-year-old mustached man went on to one of the best debut series’ in major league history.
Schneider had 15 plate appearances in that series, finishing with nine hits which included two home runs. As you may recall, he hit his first career home run in his first at bat on just his third pitch.

The second baseman/left fielder helped revitalize an offence that needed someone to get hot, as Schneider finished the season slashing .276/.404/.603 with eight homers in just 141 plate appearances. With a minimum of 100 plate appearances, his 176 wRC+ was the second-highest in the league, following just Shohei Ohtani. A caveat to that is that all those around him had at least 400 plate appearances, but it’s still an impressive feat nonetheless.
Over his last 39 plate appearances, Schneider only had two hits in his final game with a 35.9 K% and a 5.1 BB% for a -23 wRC+. However, he was still smacking the ball hard, something we looked at in his 40-man Roster Review article released on Christmas day.
There’s a lot of competition for the second base job, with Santiago Espinal, Cavan Biggio, Otto López, and Ernie Clement all on the 40-man. Not just that, but prospects such as Orelvis Martinez and Addison Barger are nearly MLB ready. Still, Schneider likely has the leg up on all those players after an incredible two months.
The 2024 season will be a big one for the former 28th-round pick. The power and eye are legit, but we’ll see if pitchers have made an adjustment to Schneider’s approach.
