Things worth mentioning…

• Chris Bassitt got the start for the Blue Jays and shut the Padres out over six innings of work. The hound on the mound scattered four hits and one walk while striking out five batters. In two starts since the All-Star break, Bassitt has logged 12 innings while allowing just two earned runs.
• The Blue Jays had Blake Snell walking a tightrope but they weren’t able to kick the floodgates open. San Diego’s ace lefty allowed five hits and walked seven batters over five innings but managed to allow only one run. The one run came in the second inning when Jordan Luplow, in his first start since being called up from Triple-A Buffalo, drove home Santiago Espinal with a single.
• Toronto’s bats finally showed up after Snell came out of the game. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. smashed a solo home run off of Luis Garcia in the seventh inning and then Alejandro Kirk launched a two-run bomb off of Tom Cosgrove in the eighth. That home run from Kirk was his first since all the way back on June 5. He went 3-for-3 with two walks on the day.
• Tim Mayza, Erik Swanson, and Jordan Romano finished off the final three innings of the game after Bassitt came out. Romano allowed a single to Gary Sanchez but finished off the game on a double play ball from Luis Campusano. It was Romano’s first outing since he hurt his back pitching in the All-Star game a couple of weeks ago.
• Next up, the Blue Jays will hit the road to face the Mariners in Seattle. Yusei Kikuchi will start the series on Friday, Kevin Gausman will make his first start of the second half on Saturday, and Alek Manoah will finish things off on Sunday.
