The Toronto Blue Jays have one of the best records in baseball, and the recent return of outfielder Daulton Varsho has only boosted the squad. Varsho missed some time with a hamstring injury and has been limited to just 33 games this season after a late start to the season following offseason shoulder surgery.
Varsho joined Lindsay Dunn and former Jay Whit Merrifield on the 6ix Inning Stretch Podcast, where the crew went through some of Varsho’s highlights on the field and asked the centre fielder some questions related to his time with Toronto so far.
In particular, Dunn asked the Jays centre fielder what he and Merrifield would talk about during their former outfield hug celebration after the Jays won.
“Ya… that’s something we can’t probably say,” said Varsho. “It was something that got created, and we just ran with it. It had a good two-year stretch, and now we’re on to more appropriate things… it was something we would yell every time.”
“It started because during one game, me and George (Springer) after one game we won, with Varsho doing the ‘Macho Man’, and we just started hugging him and jumping up and down,” said Merrifield. “And the next game, Daulton took things up a whole other level, and came up with the saying… Kevin Kiermaier definitely loved it the most.
Varsho was also asked about his jersey number switch when Anthony Santander joined the team, with Varsho giving up his #25 to the former Orioles slugger and swithcing to #5.
“I was actually down in for a checkup for my shoulder, and he came up to me, and was like ‘hey, I am not going to take #25, I am going to take this number’ and I was like ‘alright, if you want it, you can take it and we can figure out something for it'” mentioned Varsho. “And then the next day, when he had his press conference, he was like, ‘hey, I am taking your number.” Then the clubhouse manager was like, ‘We need to figure out a number is’ and I ended up taking number five. And from then, he was like, ‘What do you want?’ and so, I don’t know what he got me, but he said he got me something recently. I don’t know what it is yet, but we’ll see.”

The crew continued to talk about fantasy football and his role of being the commissioner of the club’s fantasy football league, Varsho’s love of the Green Bay Packers, potentially re-signing with Toronto when his contract is up, catching a no-hitter, his struggles with injury rehab, and playing with former Canadian reliever Jordan Romano.
