While the Toronto Blue Jays’ 2026 campaign was vastly disappointing, it’s hard not to point out the amount of injuries the club suffered over the course of its 162-game schedule.
The Blue Jays’ rotation took its fair share of hits, but one of the biggest losses during the season was the time that starting catcher Alejandro Kirk missed.
How the season went
Kirk suffered a fractured left thumb on April 3 during a 5-4 loss against the Chicago White Sox during the Blue Jays’ seventh game of the regular season. Kirk was placed on the 10-day injured list on April 4, and two days later it was announced that Kirk was set to undergo surgery to repair the fracture.
The 27-year-old missed over two months due to the fracture before returning to the Blue Jays’ lineup on June 12 during an 8-5 victory over the New York Yankees. During Kirk’s absence, the Blue Jays went 29-33 as they relied on the tandem of Brandon Valenzuela and Tyler Heineman.
In total, Kirk appeared in 79 games with the Blue Jays this season and batted .278 with 10 home runs and 43 RBIs. Kirk reached base at a .351 clip and continued his strong bat to ball skills, highlighted by 33 walks compared to only 38 strikeouts.
Following the month of June, Kirk’s batting average stood at .188, and it looked like the catcher was headed for a career-worst season. After batting .281 over the month of July, Kirk’s bat caught fire throughout the month of August.
Over 25 games in August, Kirk batted .341 with five home runs, 20 RBIs, and reached base at an impressive .412 rate. Kirk almost single-handedly kept the Blue Jays in the playoff race throughout August, as the club dealt with injuries to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer.
Following a 3-1 victory over the Yankees on August 14, in which Kirk went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs, manager John Schneider spoke about how locked in his two-time All-Star was at the plate.
“When he’s controlling the [strike] zone and hitting the ball to right field like that, that’s a really good sign,” Schneider said following Kirk’s insurance-providing, opposite-field solo shot in Friday’s 3-1 victory over the Yankees. “He looks like himself, and sometimes that just takes time. But I think that time is happening right now.”
Signed to a five-year, $58-million contract extension by the Blue Jays on March 25, 2025, Kirk will remain under contract with Toronto until the completion of the 2030 season. As the Blue Jays look ahead to 2027, a healthy campaign for Kirk could go a long way in helping Toronto ensure they improve on their disappointing 79-83 finish.
