On Tuesday evening, Mark Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported that Rays centre fielder Kevin Kiermaier is closing in on signing a lucrative multi-year extension with the club, worth more than $50-million. Bob Nightengale of USA Today later got a little more specific, adding via Twitter that the contract would be for $53.5-million over six years — $2 million more than Andrew McCutchen got from the Pirates when he signed an extension in 2012.
The deal might make for a good case study in some of the most talked-about issues of this most recent off-season — the way teams have trended away from paying big dollars to one-dimensional power hitters and the impact that newfangled Statcast data has had on front office’s ways of thinking — but for Blue Jays fans the main point of interest is obvious: what might this mean for their own centre fielder named Kevin?
Does it even mean anything?
