Former Blue Jay Luis Frías signs a minor-league deal with the Guardians

A former Toronto Blue Jays reliever has signed a minor-league deal with another team.
On Thursday morning, it was reported that the Cleveland Guardians have signed Luis Frías to a minor-league deal with an invite to Spring Training.
The Blue Jays claimed Frías off waivers in August and only pitched in four games with Toronto in 2024. It was rough going for the 26-year-old, as he gave up eight earned runs in 3.1 innings pitched, giving him a 21.60 ERA and a 6.77 FIP. Frías was significantly better in his short stint with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, posting a 0.96 ERA and a 2.60 FIP in 9.1 innings pitched, with a 27.9 K% and an 11.6 BB%.
It was all the way back in 2015 when Frías signed his first professional deal, singing during the international period that year. Up until the Jays claimed him on waivers, he had never pitched for a different organization. Frías made his big league debut in 2021, pitching three and one-third innings. The following season, he had a 10.59 ERA and a 5.41 FIP in 17 innings pitched.
His career year was in 2023 though. Frías pitched 31 innings with a 4.06 ERA and a 4.67 FIP, with an 18.7 K% and a 12.2 BB%. The Diamondbacks made the postseason that year, winning the National League pennant and making it to the World Series where they fell to the Texas Rangers. Well, Frías pitched 6.2 innings with a 1.35 ERA and a 6.11 FIP for a 29.6 K% and an 11.1 BB%.
Frías was one of many waiver claims by the Blue Jays after they decided to sell. The team still has a handful of those waiver claims remaining on the 40-man roster and they are: Brett de Geus, Easton Lucas, Michael Peterson, and Nick Robertson.
Since the off-season started, the Jays have added Nick Sandlin, Josh Walker, Yimi García, and Angel Bastardo.
