A former Blue Jays reliever is getting the call up to the big leagues.
On Friday afternoon, the New York Yankees signed long-time Blue Jay lefty, Tim Mayza, to a major league deal and added him to their active roster.
Last season with the Blue Jays, Mayza was one of the best relievers in baseball, posting a 1.52 ERA and a 2.60 FIP in 53.1 innings pitched, along with a 24.7 K% and a 7 BB%. The left-handed pitcher allowed only two home runs through the season and was terrific at keeping inherited runners from scoring.
The 2024 season was the complete opposite for Mayza, as he had an 8.03 ERA and a 4.92 FIP in 24.2 innings pitched, along with a 13.2 K% and a 9.9 BB%. Both numbers were the worst of his career. Moreover, Mayza allowed three home runs, surpassing the total he gave up the season prior.
Toronto designated Mayza for assignment in late June, with the 32-year-old signing with the New York Yankees on July 12. He pitched for the Yankees’ Triple-A team, posting a 2.16 ERA and a 2.67 FIP in 8.1 innings pitched, along with a 22.9 K% and an 8.6 BB%.
When Mayza was designated for assignment, he was the longest-tenured Blue Jay in the organization. Realistically, he should not have been cut, because while it was a rough season for the lefty, he had shown to be an effective reliever, even being elite the season prior.
The Yankees are currently battling for not only the top spot in the American League East, but for the best record in Major League Baseball. Their 72-50 record is the second best in the league, a half game behind the Cleveland Guardians’ 72-49 record. Moreover, they are also tied with the Orioles for the American League East lead.
Despite playing for the Blue Jays’ rival, hopefully Mayza’s tenure with the Yankees will be a successful one.
